Hmm, using Vonage on AT&T's Triple Play Uverse offering, which offers VoIP of their own. Seems like strange bedfellows, eh? Well maybe not for the cost-conscious. Read this thread for more.

There's a good thread going on in the forums regarding hooking up Vonage to an IP-PBX. Questions raised include, can he use Vonage with Asterisk, does he need a softphone for the SIP credentials, is there better integration with another IP-PBX, such as Brekeke Software, or do you even need an IP-PBX when Vonage has call forwarding, transfer, voicemail, 3-way calling, etc. Go check out the thread for more.

What poster asks, "What does *99 do?" Great question! The answer is that *99 sets the bandwidth saver to High with some adapters. Brian188 adds, "any Linksys adapter *99 places the adapter in Modem Pass through mode. Similar to fax pass through. Essentially it turns off Echo cancel, call waiting, silence suppression, and DTMF transfer. To use the highest bandwidth setting you either need to have it set that way in the Vonage control panel or dial *017110 from your phone. There is no charge for either the bandwidth settings, or the modem pass through."

A new Vonage subscriber with a cool Darth Vader avatar posts his first thread titled, 'New subscriber here - anything important I should know?'. Several Vonage Forum regulars gave him a nice warm welcome and gave him some tips about the DD-WRT router, QoS, and Vonage alpha. Go stop by and give him a warm welcome and feel free to post some Vonage tips.

Vonage Tips
With summer here, you'll probably be outside more doing activities such as swimming, biking, hiking, or travelling. As such, when you return to your home you'll probably be a little more tired. nothing like an afternoon nap I always say. But how to prevent calls coming in at the most inopportune time? Well, one of the most popular Vonage features is Do Not Disturb (DND). Simply dial *78 from your Vonage phone to turn on Do Not Disturb and *79 to turn it off. If you forget star codes easily, setup speed-dial 1 and speed-dial 2 on your phone for DND on & off.

Say, did you know you can save 20% on your Vonage phone bill with a special reduced yealy rate of only $239.99? That's a savings of over $59/year. All you have to do is choose to pay one annual rate instead of a monthly fee. Not sure if this applies to new customers only.

Vonage Tip
Did you know that Vonage is currently the only VoIP company that has full access to 2-1-1 (in most if not all states), an information service for referrals to health, human, governmental, and other community services? Simply pick up the phone and dial 2-1-1. Go try it out! Of course, anyone can also dial (877) 211-8667 if 2-1-1 doesn't work from their phone.

Having CallerID trouble? You're not alone. This thread goes back to June of 2007 but continually receives new replies. If you are using the Linksys PAP2 and 50% of your calls say "INCOMPLETE DATA" on your phone's Caller ID display, then you should read this poster's reply: "I have been having the unknown caller on id periodically for some time. Yet my dashboard always showed the id. I finally got off the couch and called vonage to downgrade my PAP2V2 from firmware 1.00.22 to firmware 1.00.13. Caller id has been working fine ever since! Tech support was helpful and quick to help with this "known issue" with 1.00.22 on the PAP2V2."

You can buy just about everything else on eBay, so why not a Vonage router? Buying stuff on eBay is fun & addictive. But the question is, should you buy a Vonage router on eBay? Well, a thread over on the forums poses that very question. The short answer is "no". You get the latest & greatest router for free when you sign up with Vonage. However, the long answer is that if you cancel within the first few months, you'll be billed for the router and/or an early cancellation fee. But why would you cancel, anyway? ;)

Egads! ISPs charging by the byte? A two page thread is lighting up the forums about one poster who is worried that his Vonage line will cost him money since his ISP is gonig to start charging by the byte with certain bandwidth tiers. Many repliers to the post have the attitude of "Byte me!" and who could blame them? Unfortunately, in many areas you only have 1 choice of broadband provider or 2 at the most. The good news is as one poster puts it, "at 90kbps, each hour is roughly 40mb. let's say you talk for one hour every single day, in a month, that's only 1.2GB...." The tiered pricing scheme for this particular person kicks in at 30GB, 50GB, and 100GB, so the 1.2GB probably wouldn't put him into the next tier. Still, if your data bandwidth one month is 49GB, Vonage could put you over the edge into the next tier, which would add to your ISP bill.
